About the Cover

Cover Figure

Mr and Mrs Anthony Eden

This photograph was taken in October 1935, when Eden was the British Foreign Secretary. He later became Prime Minister, and during his premiership ordered British forces to occupy the Suez Canal Zone, an action that was condemned by the UN, and that caused prolonged controversy. An account of the Suez crisis by Lord Owen appears on pages 387 to 402. In it, he explores how events were influenced by Eden's failing health at the time.
