An infant with malaria and severe anaemia at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi, Ghana. Severe anaemia is the commonest presentation of severe malaria, and a major contributor to its adverse effects. If prostration and deep breathing are also seen, the prognosis is especially poor. Chronic anaemia can also interact with diseases other than malaria, and may adversely effect psychosocial development.
