The Woolpacks, Kinder Scout

These wind-shaped outcrops are part of a large collection known as the Woolpacks, on the southern edge of Kinder Scout in the Derbyshire Peak District. Such natural formations seem to have been an inspiration for the sculptures of Henry Moore. Kinder Scout was formed in a vast delta some 300 million years ago, and the gritty sandstone that was deposited provided excellent material for the grindstones in the nearby steel industries.

Kinder's other claim to fame is as the scene of a mass trespass by ramblers from Manchester and Sheffield 75 years ago. This well publicized act of civil disobedience eventually led to the creation of National Parks in the UK, and increased rights of access to previously privately-owned land.
