About the cover

Flamingo, drawn and engraved by Mark Catesby

The illustration of the flamingo (Phoenicopterus bahamensis) on the cover is taken from one of the hand-coloured classics of natural history in the library of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh: Mark Catesby's The natural history of Carolina, Florida and the Bahama Islands, London, 1731–43 (Vol. I, plate 73). It is reproduced here by kind permission of the college.
