Inside the left ventricle
Photograph by David Barlow
This picture was taken in the left ventricle of a human heart, preserved by fixing in formalin under pressure. This closed the mitral valves and opened the aortic valves, in an approximation of the state of the ventricle at the beginning of contraction (systole). The view is from the apex of the left ventricle, taken with an endoscope inserted through a small hole. Lighting was provided by fibre-optic illuminators inserted through the aorta and the left atrium. Shrinkage of the superficial lining of the heart chamber has exaggerated the delineation of the underlying muscle fibres and connective components, to show a very beautiful architecture. The muscular anchorages for the chordae tendinae show up particularly well in the foreground.
