Research evidence and the individual patient
Hemingford Grey, Huntingdon
Sir,
Drs Schattner and Fletcher1 have done well to draw attention to the problems involved in the use of evidence-based medicine as applied to the individual patient. This confirms two views that I have long held. The first is that in clinical medicine, there is no substitute for experience; the second is that statistics are fine for making decisions about the herd, but of little value for the individual patient.
